This week in The Lamron…
Last February, The Lamron discussed why Black History Month was February, the shortest month of the year. This year, I wanted to change the topic and focus on less well-known historical Black figures.
For schools nationwide, mascots are a vital symbol of community and motivation for its students, symbolizing the greater whole of the school and becoming a vital component of sports fan and player lifestyles. At SUNY Geneseo, we are lucky enough to have one of the most iconic mascots, having won the annual SUNY Mascot Madness in both 2016 and 2018, Victor E. Knight; aptly named for his appearance as a human wearing a medieval knight’s armor.
This weekend, Feb. 7 to Feb. 8, the Geneseo Ice Knights took home two impressive wins against Brockport, getting closer to the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) tournament.
“Everything is simply a shape, a form, an identifier to let others recognize me as me! But then, what am I? Is this me? My true self? My fake self? What is it that I am?...” Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), Shinji Ikari, the protagonist of the Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE) franchise.

Starbucks is traditionally known for its green siren logo. Now, the corporation will also be known as the first United States coffee chain to allow customers to use their own personalized cups when placing mobile orders.
Knight’s Life
College students have a lot on their plates, and when it comes to their mental and physical well-being, things can get tricky— especially when we talk about sexual health. Sadly, this group is more likely to face problems like unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than others. To give you an idea, people between the ages of 15 and 24 account for more than half of all STIs in the US, even though they only make up about a quarter of those who are sexually active.
On Thursday, Feb. 6, Dr. Alexandra Oprea from the University at Buffalo’s philosophy department came to SUNY Geneseo to present on “How to Be a Good Democratic Citizen.” This was the inaugural talk of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Lecture Series.

On Feb. 1, 2025, a random Saturday night in the middle of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks decided to shake the National Basketball Association (NBA) to its core. The Mavericks sent point guard Luka Dončić, power forward Maxi Kleber, and power forward Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for power forward Anthony Davis, shooting guard Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz helped facilitate this trade by acquiring point guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and two 2025 second-round picks. This is likely the biggest trade in NBA history, so here is a breakdown of its implications.
In the fall of 2024, Geneseo officially announced the addition of their twenty-second varsity sport: Women’s Flag Football. Since the announcement in September, Geneseo has hired head coach Rob Currin to lead the university in establishing a new program. Currin, a high school English teacher at LeRoy Central School District and long-time coach of football and basketball, is a flag football enthusiast working hard to establish the collegiate women’s team here at Geneseo.

Despite best efforts to convince you otherwise, true democracy does not exist on college campuses. Even with seemingly democratic institutions on campus, such as the concept and practice of shared governance, the existence of the Student Association and College Senate, etc., the administration does not have a culture or respect for an honest, representative democracy. The Student Association can only suggest, not implement, policies that directly govern students' rights and responsibilities.
When Kim Kardashian lost a noticeable amount of weight, people online immediately jumped to proclaim that skinny was ‘in’ again. The expectations of women’s bodies shifted— now we were no longer expected to have that excellent hip-to-waist ratio (that many seemed to turn to surgical procedures to obtain). Instead, we had to lose that weight and change our shapes to fit an ever-changing body standard.

Gatekeeping refers to the act of controlling or limiting access to something, particularly in specific contexts where it involves guarding certain media and preventing others from engaging with it. With the rise of social media, fans have a big platform to share their favorite books and movies, receive recommendations, and grow fandoms. Unfortunately, many people use social media to allude to media they like with the intention of withholding the source's name from curious commenters.
On Feb. 2, 2025, Beyoncé Carter Knowles made history when her eighth album, Cowboy Carter (2024), won Album Of The Year (AOTY)— her first time winning this award in her entire iconic singing career. Beyoncé’s Grammy win polarized the internet as fans celebrated the long-deserved win, while others believed that other artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Charlie XCX were “snubbed.” I understand the frustration of your favorite artists not winning a Grammy when they put their heart on their sleeve, but Beyoncé’s win was long overdue.
