On Feb. 1, 2025, a random Saturday night in the middle of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks decided to shake the National Basketball Association (NBA) to its core. The Mavericks sent point guard Luka Dončić, power forward Maxi Kleber, and power forward Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for power forward Anthony Davis, shooting guard Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz helped facilitate this trade by acquiring point guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and two 2025 second-round picks. This is likely the biggest trade in NBA history, so here is a breakdown of its implications.

This weekend, Feb. 7 to Feb. 8, the Geneseo Ice Knights took home two impressive wins against Brockport, getting closer to the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) tournament.

This week, the world of hockey will be shaken as the 2025 “4 Nations Face-Off” is set to start on Feb. 12, 2025, running through Feb. 20, 2025. Games will be happening in Montreal and Boston. The four countries competing in this elite competition are the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden. This tournament marks the first best-on-best international hockey competition since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, serving as a preview to the 2026 Winter Olympics. 

The National Football League (NFL) annual Super Bowl will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9. The fifty-ninth inception of the NFL’s championship game will be a rematch of Super Bowl 57, between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The matchup took place in 2022 and was very exciting, with the Chiefs beating the Eagles 38-35. After two years, who is the better team heading into the rematch?

The Geneseo’s Men's hockey team continued their impressive season as they swept Manhattanville University in a doubleheader over the weekend. The first game on Friday, Jan. 31, saw the Ice Knights take down the Valiants in a highly competitive contest, in which Geneseo escaped with a 5-4 victory. The following game on Saturday, Feb. 1, was a similarly thrilling game that concluded once again with an Ice Knights victory, with the final score being 4-3. The team now sports a gaudy record of 16-2-1 and is second in both the Empire 8 and UCHC conference standings.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, the Geneseo Men's Basketball team defeated Keuka College on home turf in the Schrader Gymnasium with an impressive score of 81-53 to continue their winning streak after a tough start to the season.  

After a fantastic playoff run last National Hockey League (NHL) season, the Vancouver Canucks were looking to make it far once again at the start of this season. A feud, however, between forwards J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson created a whirlwind of events that are leaving the Canucks hung out to dry.

The National Hockey League (NHL) has been home to some of the greatest team names in sports. As the league expands, however, one team remains stuck in transition. For now, they are known as the Utah Hockey Club, functional yet far from inspiring. 

On Dec. 2, 2024, USA Hockey announced the preliminary training camp roster for the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship. The World Junior Championship is an annual event for national ice hockey teams for those under 20 years old from around the world, allowing them to compete on a world stage. The main tournament features the world’s top 10 ranked hockey nations, making up the upper division, from which a world champion is crowned.

This year's College Football Playoff (CFP) will be the year the committee introduces its 12-team playoff format. For the past 10 seasons, the CFP featured four teams that the selection committee picked based on many factors. This year, many of the factors will stand as they have in previous years; however, some teams will get in on what is considered an “auto bid.”

With the 2024-25 National Hockey League (NHL) season rounding its quarter mark, some teams are performing better than expected, and other teams are performing less than. That being said, three teams in the NHL have been consistent playoff teams, and if some changes are not made, they will most likely miss the mark this off-season.

This past weekend, the Ice Knights extended their undefeated winning streak with two dominating victories over Amherst College and Williams College. The powerful Ice Knights protected their home turf with two back-to-back wins and still have a long season ahead of them. 

It was rivalry week in college football, and that means that the sport's fiercest rivals go head to head for year-long bragging rights over their most hated competitors. This year was no different, as the drama was at an all-time high. 

With the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) second season coming around the corner within the next couple of weeks, there are many things to look forward to. Whether it be possible expansion conversations or traveling tours, this season is sure to hold a lot of excitement for fans.

Geneseo Women’s Rugby had an exciting weekend in Culpepper, Virginia, for the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Regional playoffs,  where they competed in a tiresome two-day competition against Christopher Newport University and East Stroudsburg University.

2024 will be the hundredth time a professional football game is played on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving football is one of the most anticipated days of the whole season. It gives families a way to sit down and enjoy a football tradition while they celebrate traditions of their own.

This Saturday, Nov. 16,  Geneseo Women’s Soccer traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament. Unfortunately, the Knights lost against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a final score of 3-1. Although they lost, Geneseo put up an impressive and entertaining fight against the Engineers.

The World Series champion has been crowned, but that doesn’t mean every award has been handed out. In the coming days, some of the most important awards in Major League Baseball (MLB) will be announced. These awards include each league's Most Valuable Player (MVP), the CY Young, and Rookie of the Year. Some awards have clear favorites, while others are hotly contested races. It will be interesting to see which players add to their trophy cases, but before they are announced, we will do our best to predict who wins each award.
